Horizon Europe is the EU’s next funding programme for research and innovation, with a proposed budget of €100billion available from 2021 to 2027.
Horizon Europe, which has succeeded Horizon 2020, is due to launch in April 2021, when the first competitions are expected to be announced.
Now that the UK left the EU on January 31, 2020, the UK will still participate with the Horizon Europe programme. Although the finer details are still to be finalised, businesses in the UK can continue to access EU funding until 2027.
The main objectives of Horizon Europe are:
- Strengthening the EU’s scientific and technological foundations and European Research Area (ERA)
- Increasing innovation capacity, competitiveness and the number of jobs in Europe
- Fulfilling citizens’ priorities and maintaining socioeconomic model and value
How will Horizon Europe be implemented?
The strategic planning process will focus in particular on the Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness pillar of Horizon Europe. It will also cover the Widening Participation and Strengthening the European Research Area part of the programme as well as relevant activities in other pillars.
In line with the Horizon 2020 programme, the base of the three pillars will remain.
Can you still apply for Horizon 2020?
UK scientists, researchers and businesses can continue to participate in, bid for and lead projects in Horizon 2020, as if the UK remained a member state, even though the UK has now left the EU.
The UK government is encouraging UK organisations to continue to bid into calls for new Horizon 2020 grant funding for the lifetime of the Horizon 2020 programme and, if successful, funding will be provided by the Commission.
